Here’s some stuff that’s been rocking my earholes lately.  These aren’t reviews, because I see no reason to give shine to music I don’t really like.  They’re also not necessarily the newest albums.  Just what I’ve been enjoying and think you should too.

Hatchback – Colors of the Sun

Lo Recordings, purveyors of all things cosmic disco, released this badboy back in september.  Sam Grawe does a great job of blending the electronic and the organic here, resulting in the perfect music for cruising.  I had this pumping in my ears while skiing earlier this week and it helped make sitting on the lift a little bit more bearable.

Jalapeno Records and Funk Weapons Present: The Raid Part Deux

The raid is a compilation series wherein Jalapeno records highlights the back catalog of like minded albeit smaller record labels.  The first in the series focused on the DC funksters Fort Knox.  The second installment sticks to the beltway and takes on the All Good Funk Alliance.  The cd features original tracks along with remixes from jalapeno artists.  The whole album is about as solid as it gets.  Highly recommended.  Also, if you’re in NYC, they’re playing at APT with Ursula 1000 this friday.  I picked the wrong weekend to go to Vermont, but whatever.

DJP – Hot Winter (Direct Download Link)

Here’s a free one for you guys.  Fueling my strange obsession with dancehall reggae this week is DJP, a Costa Rican (WTF?) dancehall dj and remixer.  It’s a pretty solid mix, not mindblowing, but hey it’s free and I figured it’s poignant this week since it starts off with an Obama song.

Enjoy dudes, I’ll be back with more soon.Technorati Tags: , , , , ,

Daft Punk vs Adam Freeland – AerObama

This is kinda neat.  Adam Freeland has been playing a Speak and Spell “O-B-A-M-A” sample at his gigs for a few months now.  Apparently they decided to make a video out of it.  Dunno if the term remix necessarily applies, but it’s kinda neat anyway.  I just want to know whose vinyl toy collection that is so I can raid it.

New Freeland album in April.  Hopefully it’ll be decent.

This is 10 different kinds of amazing.

I’ve gotta hit one of these up soon. It’s not every day that you get invited to a legendary musician’s place to cook a vegan meal.

For good measure, here’s bellhead by liquid liquid, which is to this day one of my favorite records.

Beastie Boys Tribute Show @ Gallery1998- AMAZING!!!!

Under The Influence: Beastie Boys Artwork!.

This is the best thing I’ve seen in a minute.   Gallery 1998 DESTROYING THE MOLD with an awesome show dedicated to the beasties.  The prices are fair and it looks like there still may be some screen prints left for cheap.  I may have to grab one.

2009 is the year we slow back down.

I’ve been hearing around the internetz that DJs and Producers are finally getting over their 130bpm blog house rave nonsense fetish and getting back to common sense music that doesn’t freak out normal people not on drugs.   This makes me extremely happy.  This week I’ve had numerous people tell me they still enjoy dj mixes I made back in 04/05.  I’ve been itching to make a new one but have been less than enthused with the musical options available to me.  This is starting to change though.  You’ll hear more here first.

Damnit Obama

Why would you appoint an attorney whose entire litigation strategy got thrown by the wayside last week to a major place in the justice department?

Sure, the industry is a disaster right now and there was no other option for a while, but to reward the guy for pursuing a flawed course and costing the music industry, the courts, and individuals millions of dollars does not sit well with me.  I bet this is Biden’s fault.

Happy [belated] Public Domain Day!

Thanks to the Berne convention, copyright protection expired in Europe for Popeye on thursday, 70 years after the original cartoonist’s death.  In India, all works written by Ghandi are free for all to use without royalties, now that it’s been 60 years since his death.  The US extends copyright to 95 years after the author’s death, so our list isn’t really that interesting.  Raggedy Ann is now public domain though, so i guess there’s that.

Resolutions

Happy new year errybody.

One of my resolutions is to update this blog at least once a week, so why not start with a post on plans for 09?    I figure I’ll stretch this out over a few weeks to keep myself content-happy.

For now, here are the two major ones.

1.  Be conscious in all that I do.

2. Get uncluttered and organized.

Also on the list are silly things like keep the blog updated, get back into DJing, cook more with leftovers, eat more rice, get back into dating shape, etc etc etc. We’ll see how those shake out.

Places I would like to live and/or visit, part one.
